Dubai’s architecture job market shows clear differences in pay based on experience, employer, location, and seniority. We looked at salary records, company pay, job listings, education data, and current hiring requirements to understand these differences.

The comprehensive salary guide covers average architect salaries, experience-based pay, high-paying companies and areas, available jobs, in-demand skills, and the qualifications needed to build an architecture career in Dubai.

Architecture salary in Dubai Highlights

AED 7,209 per month is the average architect salary in Dubai, based on around 1.1K reported salaries.

AED 27,163 per month is the reported average salary for Lead Architects.

Average pay rises from AED 5,351 for architects with 0 to 1 year of experience to AED 11,463 for those with 15 to 20 years.

AED 132,000 per year is the highest reported average salary among the listed companies.

460 Architect jobs were listed in Dubai when the data was collected.

121 of those jobs were in construction, making it the largest hiring sector.

58% of architects in the dataset have a master’s degree.

AED 7,552 per month is the highest reported salary among the listed Dubai areas

What Is the Average Salary of an Architect in Dubai?

The average architect salary in Dubai is around AED 7,209 per month. This works out to approximately AED 86,496 per year if the monthly average stays consistent throughout the year. Naukrigulf reports a monthly salary range of AED 2,000 to AED 15,000. The data is based on around 1.1K reported salaries from architects with 1 to 29 years of experience.

The reported monthly salary range is AED 2,000 to AED 15,000. The data is based on around 1.1K salaries and covers architects with 1 to 29 years of experience.

Salary measure

Amount

Average monthly salary

AED 7,208

Lowest reported salary

AED 2,000 per month

Highest reported salary

AED 15,000 per month

Approximate average annual salary

AED 86,496

Salaries analysed

1.1K

Experience covered

1 to 29 years

These figures show that architect salaries in Dubai can vary significantly. Experience, job role, employer, qualifications, and level of responsibility can affect how much an architect earns.

The figures above reflect Naukrigulf’s reported salary data and should be treated as a market reference rather than a fixed salary for every architect.

How Does an Architect’s Salary Change With Experience in Dubai?

Experience has a clear impact on architect salaries. The average monthly salary increases from AED 5,351 for professionals with 0 to 1 year of experience to AED 11,463 for those with 15 to 20 years of experience.

The salary data by experience level is:

Experience

Average monthly salary

0 to 1 years

AED 5,351

1 to 3 years

AED 5,739

3 to 6 years

AED 7,011

6 to 9 years

AED 8,831

9 to 12 years

AED 8,610

12 to 15 years

AED 11,168

15 to 20 years

AED 11,463

20 to 25 years

AED 10,243

Architects with 6 to 9 years of experience earn AED 8,831 per month on average. This rises to AED 11,168 for those with 12 to 15 years of experience.

The highest salary in the experience data is AED 11,463 per month for architects with 15 to 20 years of experience. The average then falls to AED 10,243 for professionals with 20 to 25 years of experience.

Overall, the data shows a strong link between experience and earning potential, although salary does not increase at every experience level.

Which Companies Pay the Highest Salaries to Architects in Dubai?

Several companies in Dubai offer annual architect salaries above AED 100,000. United Engineering Construction and Chicago Maintenance & Construction have the highest reported average annual pay at AED 132,000.

The highest-paying companies in the available data are:

United Engineering Construction: AED 132,000 per year

Chicago Maintenance & Construction: AED 132,000 per year

Sobha Realty: AED 129,000 per year

Dubai Outlet Mall: AED 120,000 per year

Engisoft Engineering: AED 102,000 per year

General Construction Company Limited: AED 98,250 per year

These figures show that employer choice can have a major impact on architect earnings in Dubai. The highest reported company salary is AED 132,000 per year, which is AED 33,750 higher than the salary reported for General Construction Company Limited.

How Many Architect Jobs Are Available in Dubai?

There are hundreds of architect jobs available in Dubai. NaukriGulf showed 4126 Architect jobs in Dubai when the data was collected.

The available jobs were spread across several industries:

Hospitality: 424 jobs

IT: 384 jobs

Construction: 332 jobs

Real Estate: 307 jobs

Architecture: 232 jobs

Banking and Finance: 220 jobs

This suggests that architects in Dubai can find opportunities beyond traditional architecture firms. Construction, technology, engineering, and real estate companies also hire professionals with architecture-related skills.

On Glassdoor, we found 939 architect jobs in Dubai, with 39 remote architect options availability.

Architects can work remotely, especially for roles focused on design, drafting, BIM, 3D modeling, documentation, and project coordination.

Remote work is less practical when the role requires frequent site visits, construction supervision, physical inspections, or direct coordination with contractors. Many architecture firms also use hybrid setups, where architects handle design and documentation remotely but visit project sites when needed.

For Dubai-based architects, skills in tools such as Revit, AutoCAD, BIM, SketchUp, and 3D visualization can make remote and hybrid work more accessible.

The available city comparison shows a higher average monthly salary for architects in Abu Dhabi than in Dubai.

The reported figures are:

Abu Dhabi: AED 6,500 per month

Dubai: AED 5,000 per month

Based on this comparison, architects in Abu Dhabi earn AED 1,500 more per month on average than architects in Dubai.

However, another salary dataset gives a broader average of AED 7,208 per month for architects in Dubai. The figures come from different datasets, so they should be treated as separate salary estimates rather than combined into one figure.

How Does Dubai Compare With Other GCC Locations?

The location data also compares architect salaries across several GCC markets. Qatar has the highest reported salary at AED 8,670 per month, followed by Kuwait at AED 8,158 and Saudi Arabia at AED 7,630.

Location

Average monthly salary

Qatar

AED 8,670

Kuwait

AED 8,158

Saudi Arabia

AED 7,630

Abu Dhabi

AED 7,492

UAE

AED 7,012

Oman

AED 6,647

Bahrain

AED 6,444

These figures show that architect salaries vary across GCC markets. Qatar has the highest reported salary among the locations shown, while Bahrain has the lowest.

What Are the Salaries for Different Architect Roles in Dubai?

Architect salaries also change significantly based on the job title and level of responsibility.

The available data shows the following salaries for similar architecture roles:

Principal Architect: AED 19,784 per month

Lead Architect: AED 27,163 per month

The data uses different salary periods. Associate Architect is reported as an annual salary, while the other roles are reported as monthly salaries.

The figures show a large difference between junior and senior architecture roles. Senior, principal, and lead positions command much higher reported salaries than junior positions.

What Education Do Most Architects Have?

A master’s degree is the most common highest level of education among architects in the available data.

The education breakdown is:

Master’s Degree: 58%

Bachelor’s Degree: 37%

Associate’s Degree: 3%

Doctorate Degree: 2%

Less Than High School: 0%

High School: 0%

More than half of the architects in the dataset, 58%, have a master’s degree. Another 37% have a bachelor’s degree.

The typical field of study for an architect is Architecture.

This data shows that formal higher education is common among architects. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees together account for 95% of the reported education levels.

What Are the Most In-Demand Skills for Architects in Dubai?

Revit and BIM: Architects use Revit and BIM to create detailed building models, manage project information, and coordinate designs with structural and MEP teams.

AutoCAD: AutoCAD helps architects create accurate floor plans, elevations, technical drawings, and construction documents.

BIM Coordination: Architects need to coordinate architectural models with structural and MEP models. BIM coordination also helps teams identify and resolve design clashes before construction.

Architectural Drawings: Strong drawing skills help architects prepare detailed design drawings, construction documents, shop drawings, and technical plans.

3D Modeling and Visualization: 3D modeling helps architects turn design concepts into clear visual models and show clients how the finished space may look.

Dubai Building Codes and Regulations: Architects need to understand Dubai’s building requirements to create designs that meet local safety, construction and sustainability standards.

Construction Knowledge: Architects need to understand construction methods and architectural detailing so they can create designs that contractors can build correctly.

Multidisciplinary Coordination: Architects work with engineers, contractors, consultants and other project teams. Coordination skills help keep the design and construction process aligned.

Communication Skills: Architects need to explain design ideas clearly, discuss requirements with clients, and coordinate effectively with different project teams.

Sustainable Design: Knowledge of sustainable design helps architects create buildings that reduce environmental impact and meet sustainability requirements in Dubai.

What Factors Can Affect an Architect’s Salary in Dubai?

The salary data points to several factors that can influence architect pay.

Experience is one of the clearest factors. Average monthly pay rises from AED 5,351 for architects with 0 to 1 year of experience to AED 11,463 for those with 15 to 20 years.

Employer also matters. The highest-paying companies in the available data offer average annual salaries between AED 98,250 and AED 132,000.

Location can also affect pay. Among the listed areas near Dubai, salaries range from AED 4,360 per month in Al Qusais to AED 7,552 in Dubai Healthcare City.

Job level is another major factor. The available figures show much higher salaries for senior, principal, and lead architect positions than for junior roles.

Education is also common at higher levels. Master’s degrees account for 58% of the reported education levels, followed by bachelor’s degrees at 37%.

Today’s architecture practices expect Architectural Assistants to contribute to much more than basic drawing work. Depending on the project and practice, assistants may be involved in design development, technical drawings, project documentation, 3D modelling, BIM workflows and coordination with other teams. The role is not limited to having good design skills or knowing one software programme.

If you are planning to start your career as an Architectural Assistant in the UK, or are already working in architecture and want to strengthen your skills, it is important to understand what practices look for and which skills can help you stand out.

At ASDAV, we are one of the leading architecture training institutes in the UK, helping architecture students and professionals develop practical skills for their careers. Through our Revit, BIM and other specialist courses & masterclasses, we help learners build the digital and technical skills they need to work more effectively in modern architectural practices. In this guide, we look at the key skills you need to become an Architectural Assistant in the UK and how you can develop them.

Essential Skills for an Architectural Assistant in the UK

Based on our experience helping hundreds of architecture students and professionals, these are the key skills UK practices look for in Architectural Assistants.

1. Architectural Design and Problem-Solving Skills

As an Architectural Assistant, you would be expected to support the development of design ideas rather than simply produce drawings based on someone else’s instructions. This requires a good understanding of space, scale, proportion, materials, site conditions and the requirements of a project brief. You should be able to look at a design problem, identify practical constraints and contribute possible solutions.

For example, a project may have limitations around the site, planning requirements, access, daylight, circulation or the client’s budget. An Architectural Assistant needs to understand how these factors affect the design and make appropriate changes as the project develops.

You should also be comfortable developing ideas through sketches, drawings, models and digital tools. The ability to take feedback from a senior architect and turn it into meaningful design changes is equally important. Good design skills are therefore not only about producing attractive concepts. They are about understanding why a design works, identifying what needs to change and communicating those decisions clearly.

2. Technical Drawing and Construction Knowledge

The market also expects Architectural Assistants to have a practical understanding of how architectural ideas are translated into technical information. You do not need to be an expert in every construction system when starting your career, but you should understand how drawings communicate a building’s design and how different building elements come together.

Some of the key areas you should be familiar with include:

Plans, sections and elevations

Construction details

Materials and building assemblies

Basic structural principles

Building components and specifications

Concept to technical design

UK Building Regulations and planning requirements

This knowledge is particularly important when using digital tools. A Revit model, for example, is only useful if the person creating it understands what the building elements represent and how they should be constructed. Learning software without understanding architecture and construction can result in technically correct models that do not make practical sense.

3. Revit and BIM Skills

BIM is now an important part of digital practice in architecture and construction. RIBA describes BIM as a process for creating and managing information across the lifecycle of a construction project. Its research has also highlighted how BIM moved from being a niche specialism towards becoming a standard part of design practice, with 70% of architectural practices surveyed using BIM in its digital transformation research.

For an Architectural Assistant, this means understanding more than how to draw a wall in 3D. Revit is one of the main tools used to create and manage BIM-based architectural information, allowing a project to be modelled while drawings, views, schedules and other information can be generated from the model.

This is particularly relevant in the UK, where practices use BIM and Revit in different ways depending on their size, project type and workflow. For example, RIBA’s directory includes practices that use Autodesk Revit across projects regardless of their stage or complexity, while other practices describe BIM and information management as part of their project delivery approach.

For an Architectural Assistant, useful Revit skills can include:

Setting up and managing architectural projects

Creating walls, floors, roofs, stairs and other building elements

Developing 3D architectural models

Creating plans, sections, elevations and detailed views

Producing sheets and construction documentation

Working with families and parameters

Creating schedules and managing model information

Understanding worksharing and collaborative workflows

Supporting model coordination and identifying clashes

Maintaining consistent project standards and information

The important distinction is between knowing Revit and being able to use Revit as part of an architectural workflow. Employers are more likely to value someone who can take a project from modelling through documentation and coordination than someone who only knows individual software commands.

ASDAV’s 10-week Revit Architecture course is designed around this practical approach, covering architectural modelling, documentation, detailing, annotations and sheet management, alongside practical assignments and UK-focused project scenarios.

For learners who want to develop BIM skills alongside Revit, ASDAV also offers a 12-week Revit and BIM programme covering collaborative workflows, clash coordination, cloud-based collaboration and other BIM-related processes.

This type of training can be particularly useful for architecture students, graduates and professionals who need to move from academic design work into the digital workflows used in professional practice.

4. 3D Modelling and Visualisation

With 3D modelling, Architectural Assistants can explore design ideas more quickly and communicate them more clearly to architects, clients and other members of the project team. A 3D model can help you understand spatial relationships, test proportions, study massing and identify design issues that may not be obvious in a 2D drawing.

Visualisation is also useful when presenting a project. Rendered views, diagrams and other visual outputs can help communicate the proposed materials, atmosphere, scale and relationship between different spaces. However, visualisation should support the design rather than replace it.

A strong Architectural Assistant should therefore understand the difference between making a model look good and using a model to make better design decisions. You may use tools such as Revit, SketchUp, 3ds Max, V-Ray or Lumion depending on the practice and project. The more important skill is knowing which tool is appropriate for the task and being able to move efficiently between modelling, documentation and presentation.

For example, an early-stage massing model may be used to test different building forms, while a more developed BIM model may need to provide accurate information for drawings and coordination. Being able to understand this difference makes 3D modelling a practical architectural skill rather than simply a visualisation skill.

5. CAD and Digital Drawing Skills

While BIM and 3D modelling are becoming increasingly important, CAD remains a useful skill for Architectural Assistants. You may still need to work with 2D drawings, edit existing files, prepare details and maintain drawing standards across a project.

You should be comfortable with layers, lineweights, dimensions, annotations, scales, blocks and drawing layouts, as well as producing clear and accurate plans, sections and elevations. More importantly, you should understand how a drawing fits into a wider documentation set and be able to maintain consistency when information changes.

Knowing CAD also gives you a useful foundation for moving into BIM-based workflows. The principles of accurate digital drafting, drawing organisation and documentation remain relevant even when the project moves from traditional CAD into Revit.

6. Understanding of the UK Architecture and Construction Process

If you are planning to work as an Architectural Assistant in the UK, understanding how projects are developed and delivered locally is an important advantage. UK architecture practices work within specific planning, regulatory and professional frameworks, so having an awareness of these processes helps you understand where your work fits into a project.

You should have a basic understanding of the RIBA Plan of Work, including how a project progresses from briefing and concept design through technical design and construction. You should also be familiar with the role of planning applications, Building Regulations, consultant coordination and construction information.

For example, a design that works well at concept stage may need significant changes during technical design because of requirements relating to fire safety, accessibility, energy performance, structure or planning. Understanding this progression helps you make more practical design decisions and work more effectively with architects, engineers and other consultants.

You do not need to know every regulation when starting out. However, understanding the UK process and knowing when a design decision needs to be checked against planning or Building Regulations is an important professional skill.

7. Communication and Collaboration

Communication and collaboration are common requirements across almost every career path, and architecture is no different. As an Architectural Assistant, you will rarely work on a project independently. You will need to communicate with senior architects, designers, consultants, clients and other members of the project team.

This means being able to explain your design decisions, present drawings clearly, take feedback and make changes accurately. You also need to be comfortable asking questions when something is unclear rather than making assumptions that could affect the project.

Collaboration becomes particularly important as projects become more complex. A change to an architectural model can affect structural, mechanical or electrical information, so you need to understand how your work connects with that of other disciplines. Good communication helps teams identify issues earlier, coordinate information and keep the project moving.

For an Architectural Assistant, being technically capable is important, but being someone that a project team can work with effectively and rely on is equally valuable.

8. Portfolio and Attention to Detail

Your portfolio is your opportunity to show potential employers what you can do. If you are a student or recent graduate, you can include academic projects, personal projects, competition work, internships or known projects you have contributed to. You do not need years of professional experience to build a strong portfolio. What matters is how clearly you present your design thinking, technical skills and contribution to each project.

Rather than including only final renders, show how you developed the project. Include relevant sketches, plans, sections, elevations, 3D models, technical drawings and visualisations to demonstrate your process. If you have worked on a project as part of a team, clearly explain your role and what you contributed.

Attention to detail is equally important. Check your drawings, dimensions, annotations, layouts and written content before adding them to your portfolio. Small errors can affect the overall quality of your work and may give employers the impression that you are not careful with project information.

At ASDAV, we also help learners develop practical projects through our courses and masterclasses, which can give you relevant work to strengthen your portfolio. You can also explore portfolio examples from RIBA and architecture schools online to understand how students and professionals present their work and develop their projects.

Which Skills Should You Prioritise First?

You do not need to master every architectural skill at the same time. If you are starting your career, focus first on the skills that help you contribute to real projects and build on them as you gain experience.

Skill

Priority

Why It Matters

Architectural design

High

Develop ideas and solve design problems

Technical drawing

High

Produce accurate plans, sections and elevations

Revit

High

Create models and project documentation

BIM

High

Understand digital collaboration and information management

Construction knowledge

High

Develop practical and buildable designs

CAD

Medium

Create and edit 2D architectural drawings

3D modelling & visualisation

Medium

Communicate and explore design ideas

UK planning & Building Regulations

Medium

Understand key UK project requirements

Communication & collaboration

High

Work effectively with project teams

Portfolio development

High

Demonstrate your skills to potential employers

You attend live Revit and BIM sessions where the instructor explains the topic, demonstrates it on screen, and answers questions during the class. You can also ask for help when you get stuck instead of waiting for the next lesson.

Start With Revit Basics and Build Up to BIM

You do not need to know Revit before joining. The course starts with Revit fundamentals such as views, templates, properties, families, levels, reference planes, and coordinate systems.

It then moves into BIM workflows, documentation, worksharing, clash coordination, ISO 19650, and cloud collaboration.

👉 Download Full Revit Course Syllabus (BIM Training)

Practice on Real Design Work

The course gives you more than software exercises. You work through 20+ real life case studies and 3+ capstone projects based on real client briefs. This helps you practice how Revit and BIM are used on actual design work.

Get Help Between Classes

Learning does not stop when the live session ends. You work on assignments and case studies between classes and can use the cohort WhatsApp group to raise doubts. The course says faculty and fellow learners can help with questions between sessions.

Rewatch Every Live Session

If you miss a class or want to repeat a difficult topic, you can watch the recording later. ASDAV provides access to session recordings along with templates and other course resources.

Learn More Than Revit Modeling

The course covers the parts of BIM that you may need when working on professional projects. This includes BIM Execution Plans, ISO 19650 standards, worksharing, clash coordination, cloud based collaboration, parametric families, visualization, and AI applications in BIM.

Learn From Practicing Design Professionals

The teaching team includes architects, BIM specialists, interior designers, landscape architects, and other design professionals. For example, Ar. Vijay P. has 13+ years of experience across industry and academia and has worked on large BIM projects including Nine Elms London and FIFA stadiums.

👉 Meet The Team Behind ASDAV

Designed for Beginners and Professionals (both)

The course works for different starting points. Architecture and interior design students can build their BIM foundation, fresh graduates can prepare for professional work, and practising architects can improve their modeling and collaboration skills. It also accepts learners who are new to BIM and Revit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better for beginners: Kaarwan, Novatr, or ASDAV?

All three can work for beginners, but their learning formats are different. ASDAV starts with Revit basics and moves into BIM workflows, so you can join without prior Revit experience.

It also has a 4.9/5 rating from 500+ students and uses small cohorts of fewer than 10 students, which can give beginners more direct interaction with instructors. Kaarwan and Novatr also follow structured programmes that take learners from BIM fundamentals to more advanced topics.

Is learning Revit enough to get a BIM job?

Revit is a useful starting point, but BIM work involves more than modeling. You may also need to understand documentation, coordination, worksharing, BIM standards, project delivery, and collaboration. A course that combines Revit with these workflows can give you a broader skill set for BIM roles.

Which institute offers more practical BIM training?

All three include practical work, but the approach is different. ASDAV includes 20+ real life case studies and 3+ capstone projects based on client briefs. Kaarwan includes 6+ projects, while Novatr has real world projects and a dedicated capstone project.

Are online Revit and BIM courses worth it?

They can be, especially when the course includes live classes, practical work, instructor support, and project feedback. The important question is not whether the course is online. Check what you will actually do during the course and how much support you get when you are learning Revit and BIM.

How important are live projects in a Revit course?

They are useful because they help you move from following tutorials to solving actual design problems. Working on realistic projects also gives you something concrete to show when building a BIM portfolio or discussing your skills during an interview.

What should I look for before enrolling in any BIM institute?

Start with the curriculum and check what you will actually learn. Then look at the course duration, fee, software covered, live or recorded format, project work, instructor experience, batch size, certifications, doubt support, and career services. Also check whether the schedule fits your routine.

Can working professionals learn BIM alongside their jobs?

Yes, the main thing to check is the class schedule. A fixed schedule can work if it matches your working hours, while a flexible or reschedulable format can be easier to manage. ASDAV offers flexible and reschedulable sessions, while Novatr lists fixed weekend sessions and Kaarwan follows a fixed cohort format.

Interior design is one of the most creative and varied career options in the UK, with opportunities across residential, commercial, hospitality, retail and workplace projects. You can enter the profession through different routes, as there is no single mandatory qualification required to work as an interior designer. However, professional training, practical skills and a strong portfolio can help you build credibility and access better career opportunities.

If you are planning to start a career in interior design, knowing where to begin can make the process much easier. This guide covers the key steps to becoming an interior designer in the UK, from choosing the right training and developing essential skills to building a portfolio and gaining practical experience. We have also explained how professional certification can support aspiring designers who want to develop the knowledge and skills needed to enter the industry.

What Qualifications Do You Need to Become an Interior Designer in the UK?

In the United Kingdom, there is no mandatory qualification or licence required to work as an interior designer. Interior design is a flexible profession, so you can enter the field through different routes depending on your education, experience and career goals. However, relevant training and practical skills can make it easier to build a strong portfolio and access better career opportunities.

A degree in interior design, interior architecture or a related subject can be useful, particularly when applying for roles with established design studios, architecture firms or larger companies. However, many interior designers develop their careers through professional courses, certifications, practical experience or by building their own design practice. In most cases, the key factors are your design knowledge, technical skills, ability to use industry software, understanding of the design process and the quality of your portfolio.

Professional certification can be a practical option for those who want structured interior design training without committing to a full degree programme. A good certification course should cover both design fundamentals and the practical tools used in the industry.

At ASDAV, we offer a 6-month complete online Interior Design Certification Course in the UK for aspiring interior designers who want to develop professional skills and prepare for a career in the field. The course includes one-to-one sessions, 20+ case studies, portfolio assistance and placement guidance to support students through their learning and career preparation.

Students also learn industry-relevant tools including AutoCAD, Photoshop, SketchUp, Enscape and Revit, along with other skills needed to develop and present interior design projects professionally.

If you are looking for a structured way to start your interior design journey, you can explore the ASDAV Interior Design Certification Course to learn more about the curriculum, training format and career support available.

How to Start an Interior Design Career in the UK

To help you start your career with the right foundation, we have outlined the key steps below. From developing the right skills and choosing suitable training to building a portfolio and gaining industry experience, each step can help you move closer to working professionally in interior design.

1. Understand the Skills Required

Before choosing a course or applying for jobs, understand the skills you will need to work on as an interior designer. The role combines creative thinking with technical knowledge, spatial planning and client communication.

Space planning

Design principles

Colour theory

Materials and finishes

Furniture and lighting selection

Technical drawing

AutoCAD

3D modelling and visualisation

SketchUp

Revit

Enscape

Photoshop

Mood boards and material boards

Design presentations

Client communication

Project planning

Budget awareness

Understanding of construction and building processes

Attention to measurements and technical details

2. Choose the Right Interior Design Education

If your goal is to build a long-term career in interior design and you are still at the stage of choosing your formal education, a university degree can be one route to consider. UK universities offer BA (Hons) degrees in Interior Design, Interior Architecture and Design, and related subjects, with foundation-year options available if you do not meet the standard entry requirements. For example, current courses include Interior Design at the University of East London and Interior Architecture and Design at Nottingham Trent University.

If you are changing careers, already have a degree in another field, or want to enter the profession through a shorter professional route, a specialised certification course can be more practical. When comparing courses, look beyond the certificate itself and check whether the programme teaches design fundamentals, technical drawing, industry software, project work and portfolio development.

A useful course should give you the opportunity to work on realistic design briefs rather than only learning design theory. For example, professional training can cover software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit and rendering tools alongside practical design projects.

3. Build Practical Interior Design Skills

To get your first interior design job or eventually build your own practice, you will need more than an understanding of design theory. Start by learning the basics of space planning, proportion, scale, colour, materials, lighting and furniture layouts. You should understand why a design works, not simply how to make it look attractive.

Once you are comfortable with the fundamentals, move into technical and digital skills. Learn to produce accurate 2D drawings in AutoCAD, develop 3D models in SketchUp or Revit, and create convincing visualisations using rendering software such as Enscape. You should also learn how to prepare mood boards, material specifications, furniture schedules and client presentations.

The next stage is applying these skills to complete projects. Working through residential, commercial or hospitality briefs will help you understand how a concept develops from an initial client requirement into a planned and presented interior.

4. Create a Professional Interior Design Portfolio

After you have developed your core skills and completed a few design projects, build a solid portfolio that shows how you think and work, not just the final renders. Include selected projects with the brief, concept development, mood board, space planning, drawings, material selections, 3D views and final presentation where relevant.

Avoid filling your portfolio with too many similar projects. A smaller selection that demonstrates different skills is usually more useful. For example, you could include a residential project showing space planning, a commercial project showing user requirements and circulation, and a hospitality project demonstrating material and lighting decisions.

At ASDAV, we also help students with portfolio development, so they can present their work professionally when applying for internships and entry-level roles or when starting their own freelance interior design work.

5. Gain Industry Experience

If you want to follow the employment route, gaining practical experience early can make a significant difference. Look for internships, work placements, junior positions and opportunities to assist established designers. The aim is not simply to add a company name to your CV. You want to understand how real projects are managed, revised, documented and delivered.

Some relevant entry-level roles include:

Junior Interior Designer

Interior Design Assistant

Interior Design Intern

Design Assistant

Junior Spatial Designer

CAD Technician

Interior CAD Designer

3D Visualiser

FF&E Assistant

Showroom Designer

Design Coordinator

CAD and technical roles can also provide a useful entry point into the industry. CAD skills are used across interior, set and exhibition design, and junior CAD professionals may work on drawing revisions, digital plans and technical documentation before progressing to more complex work.

As you gain experience, you can gradually take responsibility for individual project stages, client presentations, specifications and eventually complete projects. Newly qualified designers commonly begin by supporting more experienced designers before taking on greater responsibility.

6. Decide Which Area of Interior Design You Want to Pursue

Once you have a solid foundation and some project experience, you can start narrowing down the type of interior design you want to pursue. You do not need to choose a niche immediately, and your specialisation can develop naturally through the projects you work on.

You could specialise in:

Residential interiors

Commercial interiors

Hospitality design

Retail design

Workplace design

Kitchen and bathroom design

Sustainable interiors

Healthcare interiors

Exhibition and spatial design

Set design

Choosing a specialisation can help you develop deeper knowledge of specific client requirements, materials, regulations, suppliers and project types. It can also make it easier to position yourself when applying for specialist roles or attracting clients. Specialisation often develops naturally as designers gain experience in particular types of projects.

7. Learn the Business and Project Delivery Side

A strong designer also needs to understand what happens after the concept is approved. Learn how to prepare quotations, manage design revisions, communicate with suppliers, coordinate with contractors and keep projects within agreed budgets and timelines.

You should also become familiar with FF&E schedules, material specifications, drawing revisions, procurement, site coordination and client sign-off processes. These details are often what separate a good-looking student project from work that can actually be delivered.

If you plan to freelance or eventually start your own interior design business, also learn the basics of pricing, contracts, invoicing, marketing and client acquisition. This gives you the commercial knowledge needed to turn your design skills into a sustainable career.

How Long Does It Take to Become an Interior Designer in the UK?

Interior design is a practical profession with different stages, from learning design principles and technical software to creating a portfolio and working on real projects.

When we get enquiries from international architecture students and graduates who want to study, work, or build their careers in the UK, one of the first questions that comes up is whether their existing architecture qualification will help them enter the UK job market.

Some ask whether their qualification is recognised in the UK and whether they need to follow the ARB registration route. Others are more concerned about getting their first UK architecture job, understanding Revit, learning BIM workflows, or knowing what UK firms expect from their portfolio.

These questions are important because having an architecture degree is only one part of preparing for a career in the UK. Graduates also need to understand the professional requirements, work visa options, technical skills, project workflows, and expectations of UK practices.

This guide looks at what international architecture graduates need to know before pursuing work in the UK, from qualifications and ARB requirements to visas, portfolios, Revit, and BIM.

Can International Architecture Graduates Work in the UK?

Yes, international architecture graduates can work in the UK. The route will depend on their qualification, the type of role they are applying for, their experience, and their right to work in the UK.

One important point is that working in an architecture practice is different from working as a registered architect. An international graduate may be able to take on an architecture, design, technical, Revit, or BIM-related role without being registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB). However, they cannot use the protected title “architect” unless they are registered with ARB.

For graduates who want to eventually qualify as architects in the UK, the next step is to understand how their existing qualification fits into the UK’s professional registration system. This is where ARB requirements become important.

Do You Need ARB Registration to Work in a UK Architecture Practice?

An overseas architecture degree does not automatically become equivalent to a UK ARB-prescribed qualification. But, that does not mean every international graduate has to start their architectural education again in the UK. ARB provides different routes depending on the qualification and the recognition arrangements that apply to it.

What happens with an overseas architecture degree?

Some international qualifications are covered by Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) or other international recognition arrangements. Graduates whose qualifications fall under these routes may be able to use the relevant recognition process when applying for UK registration.

For qualifications that are not recognised through these arrangements, the Prescribed Examination has traditionally provided a route to demonstrate equivalence to the UK Part 1 and Part 2 qualification levels. Depending on their existing qualifications, applicants may need to demonstrate equivalence at one or both levels. They would then normally need to complete a UK Part 3 qualification before applying for registration.

The important point is that a degree with a similar name or level to a UK architecture qualification is not automatically treated as equivalent. The applicable route depends on the applicant’s specific qualification and circumstances, so international graduates should check their position with ARB before deciding whether further UK study is necessary.

ARB Registration Changes in 2027

ARB is introducing a new Registration Assurance Process from spring 2027, changing how applicants demonstrate that they meet the competence requirements for registration. The current Prescribed Examination arrangements are also being replaced as part of these reforms.

For international graduates, this makes it even more important to check the current ARB route for your specific qualification rather than assuming you need to repeat your entire architectural education in the UK.

What Architecture Jobs Can International Graduates Apply For in the UK?

While the exact requirements vary between practices, international graduates can apply for a range of roles across architectural design, technical delivery and digital project work. The right opportunity is not always listed under the title “Architect”.

Common roles include:

Architectural Assistant: Supporting design development, drawings, presentations and day-to-day project work.

Architectural Designer: Developing design proposals, drawings, models and visual material across project stages.

Architectural Technician: Producing technical drawings, construction information and detailed project documentation.

Revit Technician: Creating and developing architectural models, drawings, sheets and project documentation in Revit.

BIM Technician: Supporting model development, information production and coordination within BIM workflows.

BIM Coordinator: Managing model coordination and information exchange between project teams and disciplines.

This wider range of roles is particularly relevant for international graduates because a strong architecture background can be combined with technical or digital skills to enter the UK market through different career paths.

So, what do UK architecture practices actually look for when they assess an international graduate?

What Do UK Architecture Firms Look for in International Graduates?

UK architecture practices often work to specific technical standards, regulations and project processes. When reviewing an international graduate, firms therefore look for more than a good design portfolio. Recent UK job descriptions repeatedly ask for technical drawing ability, knowledge of UK regulations and construction, Revit, communication, coordination and the ability to work within a project team.

1. Technical drawings

Employers want to see that you can turn a design into information that can actually be used to develop and build a project.

For an architectural assistant or junior technical role, this can include:

Producing accurate plans, sections and elevations

Developing construction details rather than only presentation drawings

Preparing drawing packages for planning and Building Regulations submissions

Understanding line weights, annotations, dimensions, levels and drawing references

Producing coordinated drawings in Revit or AutoCAD

Updating drawings when consultants or senior architects issue mark-ups

Maintaining drawing revisions and organised project information

For example, recent UK roles specifically ask candidates to produce technical drawings, schedules, construction documentation and detailed drawing packages using Revit and AutoCAD.

2. UK construction knowledge

A graduate coming from another country may be familiar with different construction systems, materials and detailing methods. UK practices need people who can understand how their drawings relate to construction in the local context.

This means having some practical understanding of:

Typical UK wall, floor and roof build-ups

Insulation and cavity construction

Foundations and structural interfaces

Windows, doors and junction details

Materials and their construction requirements

Existing building surveys and refurbishment

How architectural information is coordinated with structural and MEP information

How design information develops from planning into technical design and construction

This is not just theoretical knowledge. UK employers regularly ask for experience with construction detailing, technical standards and the delivery of construction information.

3. Building Regulations awareness

UK projects are designed within a specific regulatory framework, and employers increasingly look for graduates who have at least a working awareness of Building Regulations and the Approved Documents.

At entry level, this does not mean being responsible for compliance yourself. It means understanding how requirements such as fire safety, means of escape, accessibility, ventilation, thermal performance and energy efficiency affect architectural design and documentation.

It is also useful to understand the difference between planning information and Building Regulations information. A graduate who knows that a project does not simply move from “design” straight to “construction” is already closer to how a UK practice operates.

4. Portfolio

Your portfolio is often where an employer first sees whether your skills match the role. For international graduates, it should do more than demonstrate that you can produce attractive architectural visuals.

Show how a project developed from an initial idea into a resolved proposal. Include plans, sections, technical drawings, details, Revit documentation and design iterations where relevant. If you worked on a project as part of a team, clearly explain what you were responsible for.

A portfolio that contains only renders can make it difficult for an employer to understand whether you can contribute to the technical and production side of a project. Showing the process and the decisions behind the final design gives a much clearer picture of your ability.

5. Design development

Firms are not only interested in whether you can produce an attractive concept. They want to see how an idea develops as the project becomes more detailed.

That can mean showing how you:

Respond to a brief

Develop layouts and massing

Test different design options

Respond to planning constraints

Resolve circulation and spatial requirements

Incorporate technical constraints

Develop a concept into a workable proposal

Current Part 2 roles, for example, ask candidates to support projects from concept and feasibility through planning and later stages, rather than working only on initial design ideas.

Is Revit Important for Getting an Architecture Job in the UK?

Yes. Based on the UK architecture job descriptions we reviewed, along with the requirements we regularly see from architecture students and graduates, Revit is one of the most useful technical skills to have when applying for architecture roles in the UK. Employers are not simply looking for candidates who can open Revit and create a basic model. They want people who can use it as part of an actual project workflow.

This includes developing architectural models, producing plans, sections and elevations, setting up sheets, working with families and views, and creating organised project documentation. For technical and BIM-focused roles, employers may also expect an understanding of model coordination and project information management.

The key difference is between knowing Revit and being able to contribute to a live project using Revit. A graduate who can take a design from a developed model through to coordinated drawings and documentation can be much more useful to a practice from the start.

This is why we offer our complete Revit & BIM Certification Course, designed around the skills architecture students and graduates need for professional practice. The 12-week programme includes live sessions, practical project work and UK-focused workflows, helping learners develop Revit and BIM skills that reflect how the software is used in architecture practices.

The focus is not just on individual Revit tools, but on learning how to model, document, coordinate and deliver architectural information as part of a real project workflow.

What BIM Skills Should International Architecture Graduates Learn?

For international graduates, BIM skills can help bridge the gap between architectural education and how multidisciplinary projects are delivered in UK practices.

Key BIM skills include:

BIM project setup and standards

ISO 19650 principles

Common Data Environment (CDE)

BIM Execution Plans (BEP)

Information requirements

Model coordination

Architectural model development

Multidisciplinary coordination

Information exchange and deliverables

Model checking and quality control

Naming and revision conventions

Revit worksharing and collaboration

Linked and federated models

Clash detection and coordination

COBie and structured project information

BIM documentation and information management

Building a Career in UK Architecture Starts Before Your First Job Application

So, you can work in the UK as an international architecture graduate, but the path will depend on the role you want to pursue, your qualification and your right to work. If your long-term goal is to become a registered architect, you will also need to follow the relevant ARB route, which has its own requirements and process. We will cover the UK architectural registration process in more detail in another guide.

For getting your first role, however, your practical skills matter just as much. Strong Revit, BIM, technical drawing and project workflow skills can help you show employers that you are ready to contribute to a UK practice.

At ASDAV, we help architecture students and graduates build these practical skills through our Revit and BIM courses and masterclasses, with a focus on professional workflows and UK practice.
Yes, Interior designers can work remotely. Such opportunities are becoming more common for designers as firms adopt digital design tools and online collaboration.

We have reviewed nearly 847 remote job opportunities for Interior designers worldwide on LinkedIn.

Remote work is common for tasks such as creating 2D and 3D designs, preparing layouts, selecting materials, and meeting clients online. However, interior designers also need to visit sites to take measurements, supervise installations, coordinate with contractors, and ensure the design is executed correctly.
On-site opportunities for interior designers globally are around 5065, and 515 opportunities in India according to LinkedIn job posts. However, you can also opt for 430 global hybrid job opportunities.

Additionally, we reviewed remote interior job listings on Naukri.com and found 158 opportunities, of which 31 were remote interior designer roles from India.

Overall, while remote work is possible for certain responsibilities, most interior design jobs follow a hybrid or on-site work model because successful project execution depends on regular site visits and client interaction.

How Many Years Does It Take to Become a Successful Interior Designer?

It typically takes 5 to 8 years to become a successful interior designer. This includes 2 to 4 years of formal education, followed by several years of hands-on experience, portfolio building, and working on real client projects.

Many students believe architecture and interior design are almost the same because both involve designing buildings and spaces. While they often work together, they have very different roles.

An architect designs the building itself, focusing on structural planning, safety, construction, and building regulations. In most countries, becoming an architect also requires a professional degree and licensing. An interior designer, on the other hand, designs the spaces inside a building, creating functional, comfortable, and visually appealing environments.

Today, these professions collaborate more than ever. Modern projects bring together architects, interior designers, engineers, and BIM specialists using the same digital workflows and tools like Revit.

So, which career should you choose? Is architecture better for long term growth? Does interior design offer more creativity? Which pays more, and what skills are employers looking for? In this guide, we’ll compare both careers with practical insights to help you make an informed decision.

Architecture vs Interior Design at a Glance

Architecture and interior design both shape the spaces we live and work in, but they differ in their scope, responsibilities, education requirements, and career paths. Here’s a quick comparison to help you understand the key differences.

What Does an Architect Actually Do?

Architects are responsible for planning, designing, and overseeing the construction of buildings. Their day-to-day responsibilities vary depending on their role, specialization, and the stage of the project. Some architects focus on design, while others work more closely with clients, consultants, or construction teams.

Some of the key responsibilities of an architect include:

Conceptual building design

Site analysis and feasibility studies

Preparing architectural drawings and plans

Creating 3D models and BIM models

Ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations

Coordinating with structural, civil, and MEP engineers

Developing construction documentation

Presenting designs to clients

Obtaining approvals and permits

Visiting construction sites and monitoring progress

Solving design and construction challenges

Managing project timelines and coordination

Incorporating sustainable and energy-efficient design practices

Collaborating with contractors and consultants

Architects play a much broader role than simply designing buildings. They are responsible for ensuring that a project is safe, functional, compliant with regulations, and ready for construction while balancing the client’s vision, budget, and technical requirements.

What Does an Interior Designer Actually Do?

Interior designers create spaces that are functional, comfortable, and visually appealing. Their responsibilities go far beyond choosing furniture and colors. Depending on the project, they work closely with clients, architects, contractors, and suppliers to design interiors that meet both practical and aesthetic requirements.

Some of the key responsibilities of an interior designer include:

Understanding client requirements and project goals

Space planning and layout design

Preparing floor plans and interior drawings

Creating 3D models and visualizations

Selecting furniture, materials, and finishes

Designing lighting plans

Choosing color palettes and décor elements

Ensuring functionality and user comfort

Incorporating accessibility and safety requirements

Estimating material quantities and project costs

Coordinating with architects, contractors, and vendors

Supervising site execution and installations

Using software such as Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp, and BIM tools

Managing project timelines and client approvals

Interior designers combine creativity with technical knowledge to transform empty spaces into environments that are practical, attractive, and tailored to the people who use them. Their work plays an important role in improving how a space looks, feels, and functions.

Architecture vs Interior Design: Skills You Need

Both careers require creativity and problem solving, but the skills needed for each profession are different. While there is some overlap, architects generally focus more on technical and construction aspects, whereas interior designers place greater emphasis on space planning and user experience.

Skills Every Architect Should Have

Architectural design

Technical drawing

Structural understanding

Building codes and regulations

Construction knowledge

Mathematics and analytical thinking

Spatial visualization

Problem solving

Attention to detail

Project management

Communication and collaboration

Revit and BIM

AutoCAD

3D modeling and visualization

Skills Every Interior Designer Should Have

Creativity and design thinking

Space planning

Color theory

Material and finish selection

Lighting design

Furniture planning

Visual styling

Client communication

Budget planning

Attention to detail

Project coordination

Revit and BIM

AutoCAD

SketchUp and 3D visualization

Although their responsibilities differ, both architects and interior designers benefit from learning modern digital tools like Revit and BIM, as these have become standard across the architecture, engineering, and construction industry.

Education Path: Which Course Should You Choose?

The education requirements for architecture and interior design are quite different. Architecture follows a structured academic and licensing path, while interior design offers multiple entry routes depending on your career goals and the country you plan to work in.

Architecture

If you want to become a licensed architect, the usual path is:

Complete 10+2 with the required subjects (requirements vary by country)

Earn a professional Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) degree from a recognized institution

Complete any mandatory internship or practical training required by your country

Register with the relevant licensing or regulatory authority before practicing independently, where applicable

Pursue a Master of Architecture (M.Arch) if you want to specialize in areas such as urban design, sustainable architecture, conservation, landscape architecture, or project management

In today’s industry, learning Revit and BIM is equally important. Most architecture firms use BIM workflows for design, documentation, and project coordination. At ASDAV, we offer a live instructor-led Revit & BIM Certification Course to help architecture students build practical, job-ready skills. Explore the course and enroll in the upcoming batch.

Interior Design

Interior design offers more flexibility, and there is no single mandatory education path in many countries.

Common routes include:

Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design

Diploma or advanced diploma in Interior Design

Professional certification programs

Short-term industry-focused courses to build practical skills

Learning through internships, apprenticeships, and real-world project experience

Many successful interior designers build their careers through a strong portfolio, practical experience, and proficiency in industry-standard software such as Revit, BIM, AutoCAD, and SketchUp. However, some countries or specific commercial sectors may require additional certifications, so it’s always worth checking local regulations if you plan to practice internationally.

If you’re looking to build practical, job-ready skills, ASDAV’s 24-week Professional Interior Design Certification Program combines live training with real-world projects. We’ve trained 500+ students and helped aspiring designers prepare for careers in the industry. Explore the program and enroll in the upcoming batch.

Regardless of which career you choose, employers increasingly look beyond qualifications. Practical experience, a strong portfolio, and proficiency in modern design tools often have a significant impact on your career opportunities and growth.

Salary Comparison Between Architects and Interior Designers

Architecture and interior design can both lead to rewarding careers, but the way professionals earn is often different. Architects usually follow a more structured career path, working in architecture firms, construction companies, or engineering consultancies before moving into senior leadership or starting their own practice.

Interior designers also have plenty of full time job opportunities, but many eventually choose to work as freelancers, consultants, or studio owners, where their income depends on the projects they handle and the reputation they build.

These ranges are based on industry salary data from multiple hiring platforms and market analyses. Actual salaries vary depending on location, employer, specialization, portfolio, and technical skills.

One important thing to understand is that experience alone does not determine salary. Employers increasingly pay for specialized skills that improve project delivery and collaboration. Architects and interior designers who are proficient in Revit, BIM, project coordination, and advanced visualization tools often command higher salaries than professionals with similar experience but only basic drafting skills.

BIM Managers, for example, are among the highest-paid professionals in the architecture and construction industry, with salaries reaching ₹25 to ₹35 LPA in leading firms.

Ultimately, there is no clear winner between architecture and interior design when it comes to earning potential. Both careers can offer excellent salaries and long term growth. The biggest factors that influence your income are your specialization, practical skills, software expertise, project portfolio, and your ability to solve real-world design and construction challenges.

Which Career Has Better Future Scope?

Both architecture and interior design have strong long term career prospects. Rapid urbanization, smart city development, sustainable construction, commercial real estate growth, and renovation projects are creating demand for professionals across the architecture, engineering, and construction industry.

The real difference is not which profession has a better future, but whether your skills match where the industry is heading.

Future Scope of Architecture

Architecture continues to be a stable and respected profession. Governments and private developers are investing heavily in infrastructure, housing, healthcare, education, and commercial buildings, creating consistent demand for architects.

At the same time, firms are looking for professionals who understand sustainable design, digital construction, and multidisciplinary collaboration rather than just traditional drafting.

Future Scope of Interior Design

Interior design is expanding beyond residential projects. Businesses today invest significantly in office spaces, retail stores, hotels, hospitals, educational institutions, and luxury homes that prioritize user experience, wellness, and functionality. As a result, interior designers with strong technical and visualization skills are finding opportunities across multiple industries, both as employees and independent consultants.

Where the Industry Is Heading

Regardless of the career you choose, employers increasingly value professionals who can work with modern digital workflows. Some of the fastest growing areas include:

Building Information Modeling (BIM)

Revit and digital project delivery

Sustainable and green building design

Smart buildings and digital twins

AI-assisted design workflows

Renovation and adaptive reuse projects

3D visualization and immersive design

Industry research shows that BIM adoption is accelerating worldwide, with the global BIM market expected to grow at a double digit annual rate over the next decade. Many firms now consider BIM proficiency a standard requirement rather than an additional skill.

Which Career Fits Your Personality?

There is no right or wrong choice between architecture and interior design. The best career depends on your interests, strengths, and the type of work you enjoy doing every day. Use this simple decision matrix to see which path matches your personality.

Choose Architecture if you:

Enjoy designing entire buildings and structures

Like mathematics and logical problem solving

Are interested in construction and engineering

Want to work on large scale projects

Don’t mind frequent site visits and coordination meetings

Enjoy technical drawings and planning

Like solving structural and design challenges

Want to become a licensed professional

Prefer a structured career path

Choose Interior Design if you:

Love creating beautiful and functional spaces

Have a strong sense of creativity and aesthetics

Enjoy choosing colors, materials, and furniture

Like understanding how people use spaces

Prefer working closely with clients

Want to work on residential, retail, hospitality, or commercial interiors

Enjoy visual storytelling and styling

Are interested in freelancing or starting your own design studio

Like seeing quick design transformations

Your personality should guide your career choice, but your skills will shape your success. Whether you become an architect or an interior designer, combining creativity with practical knowledge and industry-standard tools like Revit and BIM will open more opportunities throughout your career.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is architecture harder than interior design?

Neither career is harder than the other. They simply require different skills and mindsets. Architecture involves structural planning, building regulations, construction methods, and technical problem solving, while interior design focuses more on space planning, user experience, materials, lighting, and aesthetics.

Success in either profession depends on your interest, dedication, and willingness to keep learning. With the right guidance and practical training, both career paths become much easier to navigate. At Asian School of Design & Applied Vastu (ASDAV), we offer industry-focused training in Interior Design as well as professional Revit and BIM courses that help students build practical skills employers value.

Which career pays more: architect or interior designer?

There is no fixed answer because salaries depend on several factors, including your experience, location, specialization, portfolio, technical skills, and the company you work for.

Architects often follow a structured corporate career path with steady salary growth, while interior designers have greater opportunities to increase their income through freelancing, consulting, or running their own design studio. In both professions, professionals with expertise in Revit, BIM, project coordination, and digital workflows generally earn more than those with only basic design skills.

Can I study interior design after 12th?

Yes. Interior design is one of the most popular career options after completing 12th grade. Depending on your goals, you can choose from degree programs, diploma courses, certification programs, or industry-focused practical training.

If you are exploring your options, we have created a detailed guide covering the best interior design courses after 12th, eligibility, duration, and career opportunities.

Do architects also design interiors?

Yes. Many architects also design interior spaces, especially in residential and commercial projects where they offer complete design solutions.

However, the reverse is different. Interior designers are experts in designing interior environments, but they cannot independently perform the legal responsibilities of an architect, such as approving structural designs or practicing as a licensed architect in countries where registration is mandatory. Those responsibilities require the appropriate architectural education and professional licensing.

Can an interior designer work on commercial buildings?

Yes. Interior designers regularly work on commercial projects such as offices, hotels, restaurants, retail stores, hospitals, educational institutions, and corporate spaces.

However, their responsibility is limited to the interior environment. The building’s structural design, construction drawings, and regulatory approvals remain the responsibility of the architect and engineering team. Interior designers typically collaborate closely with architects throughout the project.

Is Revit necessary for interior designers?

In today’s job market, Revit is quickly becoming one of the most valuable skills for interior designers. Many architecture firms, interior design studios, and construction companies now use BIM workflows to improve collaboration and reduce design errors.

Learning Revit allows interior designers to create intelligent 3D models, produce construction documentation, coordinate with architects and engineers, and work on larger commercial projects. It is no longer just an optional skill for many employers.

If you want to build industry-ready skills, ASDAV offers a dedicated Professional Revit & BIM Certification for Interior Designers that focuses on practical, project-based learning.

What is the difference between CAD and BIM?

CAD (Computer-Aided Design) is primarily used to create 2D drawings and 3D models. Each drawing is usually managed separately, so any design change often has to be updated manually across multiple files.

BIM (Building Information Modeling) goes much further. Instead of creating separate drawings, BIM creates a single intelligent digital model that contains information about walls, doors, windows, materials, quantities, and other building components. When one part of the model changes, the related drawings, schedules, and documentation update automatically.

This is why BIM has become the preferred workflow for modern architecture, engineering, and construction projects, with Revit being one of the most widely used BIM software platforms.

Which career has better future scope in Dubai and the United Kingdom?

Both architecture and interior design offer excellent career opportunities in Dubai and the United Kingdom. Large infrastructure projects, luxury residential developments, hospitality, commercial construction, and urban redevelopment continue to create demand for skilled professionals.

Rather than competing with each other, architects and interior designers work together on almost every major project. Architects design the building, while interior designers create the spaces people use every day. One profession complements the other.

Ultimately, your career growth depends less on your job title and more on your practical skills, software expertise, portfolio, communication skills, and experience. Professionals with knowledge of Revit, BIM, sustainable design, and digital collaboration are increasingly preferred by employers in both markets.

Does AI reduce the demand for architects or interior designers?

No. AI is changing how architects and interior designers work, but it is not replacing the need for skilled professionals.

Today’s AI tools can generate concepts, automate repetitive drafting tasks, and speed up visualization. However, they cannot replace human creativity, client communication, design thinking, site coordination, technical decision making, or knowledge of building regulations.

Professionals who learn to use AI alongside tools like Revit and BIM are likely to have an advantage as the industry continues to evolve.

1. Tiny House Design

Difficulty Level: 🟢 Beginner (1–2 weeks)

A tiny house project asks you to design a compact home that feels comfortable despite its limited size. You’ll create a complete floor plan with spaces like a living area, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and storage while ensuring the layout remains practical, open, and easy to navigate. The challenge is making a small home live much larger than it actually is.

9. Adaptive Reuse Project

Difficulty Level: 🔵 Advanced (3–4 weeks)

Instead of designing a building from scratch, this project asks you to give an old structure a new purpose. You might transform an abandoned warehouse into a coworking space, convert a factory into an art gallery, or redesign a historic building as a boutique hotel. The challenge is preserving the building’s identity while adapting it for modern use.

What you will learn:

Evaluate existing buildings by identifying structural elements that should be retained, modified, or replaced.

Balance preservation with innovation by introducing modern functions without losing the building’s original architectural character.

Solve design constraints creatively since you’ll work around existing walls, columns, floor levels, and structural systems.

Understand sustainable architecture in practice by reducing demolition waste and extending the life of existing buildings.

Develop renovation-focused design thinking that differs significantly from designing entirely new structures.

10. Architectural Walkthrough & Visualization

Difficulty Level: 🟢 Beginner (1–2 weeks)

A great design deserves a great presentation. In this project, you’ll transform one of your architectural models into realistic images or a walkthrough animation using visualization software.

You’ll focus on lighting, materials, landscaping, camera angles, and rendering techniques to communicate your ideas clearly.

What you will learn:

Create realistic architectural renders by applying materials, lighting, shadows, and textures that bring your designs to life.

Choose camera angles that tell a story by highlighting important spaces and architectural features through thoughtful composition.

Produce professional walkthrough animations that help clients and reviewers experience the building before it’s constructed.

Build portfolio-ready presentation boards by combining plans, elevations, sections, renders, and diagrams into a clear visual narrative.

Communicate design ideas more effectively by presenting architecture in a way that’s easy for both professionals and non-designers to understand.
