How the 16 Vastu Zones Are Divided
A full circle has 360 degrees, and Vastu divides it into 16 equal zones, so each zone covers 22.5 degrees. Every zone is centred on its direction. North-East, for example, is centred on 45 degrees and runs from 33.75 to 56.25 degrees. A reading anywhere inside that band belongs to the North-East zone, whether it is 35 degrees or 55 degrees.
The basic rule used is:
Zone = the 22.5 degree band in which your compass reading falls, measured clockwise from North at the centre of the home
Two habits separate an accurate reading from a guess. First, always measure from the centre of the home or plot, the Brahmasthan, because zones radiate from that point and a reading taken at the gate can put a room in the wrong zone. Second, treat readings close to a border with care. A reading of 55 degrees is North-East, but it sits near the East border, so a careful practitioner measures again and averages before deciding. This finder flags border readings for exactly that reason.
Each zone also carries a governing element and a set of activities it supports. The fire zones of the south-east support the kitchen, the earth zones of the south-west support stability and the master bedroom, and the disposal zone of the south-south-west is where toilets do the least harm. Knowing the zone is what turns general Vastu tips into advice that fits a specific home.
